What type of lawnmower do you need for a small garden?

Choosing the correct lawnmower to suit your gardening needs can be a minefield! With a wide range of models available, it can be difficult to know where to start.

Whether it’s a petite patio or a tiny terrace, the good news is that you will not need the most advanced machine to keep your small outdoor space in order. Small gardens up to the size of a tennis court can often be mowed in one go with minimal effort. Despite this here are a few things you should look out for.

1. Storage space

If you have a confined outdoor space, it will often mean that storage space is also limited. Therefore, you don’t want to take up all of your shed or storage space with a massive lawnmower. When you are looking to purchase a new lawnmower, try to find machines that have clever storage solutions such as machines with folding handles. This will mean they require less space and can be stored nearer to the walls.

2. Grass collection

A small garden can often be cut in one go. You will likely be able to cut the whole thing without having to stop and empty your grass box on multiple occasions – depending on the size of the lawn. To make sure this is possible you should try to find a machine that has a reasonable sized collection box that can take on the job without any fuss. This will make cutting the grass much less of a chore.

3. Cutting width

To cut a small lawn quickly and efficiently, the cutting width can be lowered. That being said, a cutting deck that is too small will cut slower than a larger deck. If your garden is a conventional rectangle, a larger cutting deck will not be as much of an issue but if you need to constantly maneuver your machine to cut awkward areas, a smaller machine would be better placed to handle this.

4. Power type

All types of mowers can easily handle a small garden, however there are a few things to consider. An electric mower with a cable can be difficult to manage, especially if it has to move around obstacles like trees and bushes. Petrol mowers will have more power but will also be much noisier than their electrical or battery counterparts.

5. Budget

Realistically, if you are not going to be spending too much of your time cutting your lawn, you will not need to fork out a lot on a mower. You will not need technological add-ons such as assisted drive as the basic models will get the job done.
