- Cut the grass
This is the simplest task you can do in your garden. Grass needs to be cut roughly in the time between late March and the end of October (depending on the weather). Depending on the size of your garden, this can be done in no time at all, especially if you have the right equipment for the job. Not all lawn mowers are created equally, so to make sure you get the grass cutting finished - make sure you have the right tool for the job.
- Set up garden lighting systems
Garden lighting is a great addition to a garden all year round and is worth investing in. If you want to keep your summer BBQ party going into the evening, install some outdoor lighting that provides the perfect ambience to keep the atmosphere on a high into the small hours (provided the neighbours don't mind!).
- Remove your weeds
It is important to remove your weeds because they have a habit of stealing the soil and nutrients from your lawn, so the plants you actually want to grow will struggle. You can either pull these weeds out by hand or you can buy purpose built weed removal kits. If you do go for a weed killer, you should ideally look to purchase an organic variety so you don’t damage your lawn.
- Repair fences
After a long lifespan your fences can become tired and damaged so it is always important to give them a bit of TLC every once in a while. If you do spot a broken section of your fence you should try to mend it as soon as possible as otherwise you run the risk of it taking down the rest of the fence. Replacing a panel will prolong the lifespan of your fence overall, and doesn't have to take too long, provided you have the right equipment.
- Plant flowers
Depending on the time of year, a few hours spent planting flowers can have huge benefits further down the line. You would be amazed at the results you can achieve by simply sprinkling a few seeds in soil. If you do want to plant new flowers you should, however, do a bit of background reading on ideal conditions just so you can give your new seedlings the best possible chance at flourishing.
- Trim your hedges
You will need to do this twice or three times a year depending on the species of hedge. It doesn’t have to take too long unless your hedge is particularly vast, especially if you have the right hedge trimmer to get the job done. A well-trimmed hedge makes your whole garden look much smarter so it is worth spending time giving your hedges a haircut.
- Repaint your shed
After a few years, your shed may start to look a bit tired. Provided it is still in working order, a lick of paint will do it the world of good. Giving your man cave a bit of a face-lift can lift the whole look and feel of your garden so it is worth spending a bit of time giving it the time it needs every so often.
- Clean up patio or decking
Patio stones can become dirty after a while due to weather so you should look to give this space a thorough clean perhaps once or twice a year. A pressure washer will take a lot of the sting out of the work and it will be very satisfying to see the dirt wash away with ease.
- Install irrigation systems
This may take a bit of work but in the long run you will be very glad you spent the time installing. If you take the time to set up a kickass irrigation system in your garden it will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run as you won’t need to be constantly watering your plants – especially in the summer months. Why not go the whole distance and create a smart garden that links in with weather sensors?
- Chop some firewood
Whether it is for the late night summer bonfires or chilling out by your fireplace in wintertime, there is often a need for firewood all year round. Before you start tackling any wood with a chainsaw you should first ensure you have all of the correct safety equipment, including at the very minimum boots, trousers, jacket and helmet.
